Are there more passionate people than entrepreneurs? Unlikely. And yet, sometimes that passion is not conveyed effectively in their various texts. Here’s why poorly written communication detracts from the value and passion your SMME offers:
Typos and grammatical errors tarnish your reputation
Want to become a target for ridicule? Allow typos into your texts.
‘Studies have shown that errors can affect how others view your conscientiousness, intelligence, and trustworthiness.’
Read here for some hilarious examples, such as an education software company promising their students that they’ll have so much fun using its product, they ‘won’t even know their learning’. (Yikes.)
Thing is: it’s laughable… until it happens to you.
Errors affect SEO and spam algorithms
Because scammers intentionally insert typos and grammatical errors into their email subject lines and body (it’s a thing; Google it), they’ve started getting automatically directed to the spam folder.
A typo in the subject line of a newsletter or email marketing piece can exile your message to spam.
Don’t take the time to draft a delightful newsletter and then get trashed by the typo-bot.
Readers give up on hard-to-read-text
Many of us intuit the structure and meaning of the text we write – and sometimes we make the false assumption that the reader automatically understands what we’re trying to convey.
Harvard Business Review argues that ‘[c]larity in marketing tells customers — and workers — that they can trust you.’ When your text doesn’t have a logical and concise flow, readers get confused – and lose interest. Added to that, copy ‘filled with industry jargon and meaningless superlatives’ turns readers off. Not only should the formatting be clear, but so should the content.
A professional editor makes sure your documents are clear, concise, and mistake-free, which gives your business a polished, professional look.
